Yet many design engineers and buyers fall into the same traps when choosing operating parts and standard elements: from overengineering solutions to misidentifying functional needs. Mistake #1:
 

Choosing Overengineered Parts That Add Unnecessary Complexity

Many teams default to the part with the most features, assuming it’s the safest or most versatile choice. But this can backfire.

Example: Consider our cam lever series. We often see buyers select the adjustable cam lever (K0006) over the standard version (K0005), thinking “adjustable” means better. However, the adjustable model requires a screwdriver to fine-tune tension. This is a step that defeats one of the key benefits of using a cam lever in the first place: tool-free operation.

When to choose adjustable:
Only if the swing radius is obstructed and the lever must clamp at a specific angle.

When to choose standard:
In all other cases, the standard cam lever offers faster, more intuitive use — no tools required.

Mistake #2:

Overlooking Standard Options in Favor of Custom Solutions

It’s tempting to design a custom component when you don’t immediately see the “perfect fit” in a catalog. But chances are, a solution already exists within our extensive standard line.

Mistake #3:

Selecting Parts Without Considering Installation Constraints

A part that looks ideal on paper might be completely impractical in your actual build environment.

Example: Adjustable handles and star knobs generally come in multiple sizes per thread size. A larger handle or knob may feel more comfortable to grasp and provide greater torque when in use, but in a tight installation space it might be too bulky and cause obstructions. In those cases, a smaller handle or knob is the smarter choice.

Another option is an adjustable handle with a ratcheting function. This lets the user operate the handle even when it cannot be spun a full 360 degrees. Similarly, tension levers may look appealing for their longer handle and aesthetics, but they may not always fit. Adjustable handles provide the same function in a more compact form factor.

Other examples:

  • Handles that require room to rotate fully — Adjustable handles and tension levers solve this with a ratcheting action.

  • Ball lock pins that protrude out the back side and interfere with mechanisms — K0724 ball lock pin bushings engage the pin end, enabling secure use without protrusion.

  • Blind-hole applications where standard ball lock pins don’t engage — Bushings with KIPPlock thread locking elements allow depth adjustment with an Allen wrench for precise, repeatable engagement.
     

Solution: Evaluate not just the part, but the space around it.

Ask yourself: How will this be installed? How will it be accessed? Will tools be needed?

Focusing Only on Price, Not Total Lifecycle Cost

It’s easy to compare line items and pick the lowest-cost option. But doing so without evaluating material durability, wear resistance, or maintenance needs can cost you more in the long run.

What to consider:

  • Will the part be exposed to chemicals, moisture, or vibration? 

  • Does it need to meet specific hygiene or safety standards?

  • Is it a wear part that needs regular replacement or one that should last for years?
